Shin Guards for combat sports:

Shin Guards, in any contact sport involving kicks, are as important as gloves in boxing. Without them, a simple shin-to-elbow or shin-to-shin clash during sparring can keep you off the mat for weeks. And we're not exaggerating: the shin is the bone that takes the most impact in Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and MMA.

At RoninWear we've been selecting Shin Guards that actually protect since 2007. We know from personal experience which models hold up to daily training and which ones start rotating or losing padding within two months. Here you'll only find Shin Guards from brands we've tested and trust: Venum, Fairtex, Buddha, Leone, Twins, Okami, Hayabusa, and many more.

Rigid Shin Guards with instep or sock-style Shin Guards?

The first step is deciding what type of Shin Guard you need, and that depends on what sport you train and how you train.

Rigid Shin Guards with instep protection

These are the most classic and common in Muay Thai and Kickboxing. They feature high-density padding that covers the entire shin and instep in one integrated piece. They fasten with wide velcro on the back of the calf and usually include an elastic band under the foot to keep them from shifting when you kick. They offer the best absorption for heavy, repeated impacts β€” ideal for intense sparring and pad work.

Most professional Shin Guards from brands like Fairtex or Twins follow this design. The instep stays protected from accidental knees and elbows, and the rigid padding distributes the impact when your shin clashes with another shin.

Sock-style Shin Guards (tubular)

Lighter and more flexible, made from elastic cotton or neoprene. They slip on like a sock and have no velcro. The padding is softer and the profile lower, allowing for free movement on the ground.

These are the preferred Shin Guards for MMA and striking-based grappling, because they're far less cumbersome than classic guards during grappling work or transitions between standing and ground. They're also widely used in low-intensity technical training sessions where you just need something light that stays out of the way but still gives your shins some protection.

Rigid Shin Guards without instep

Less common, but they have their place. They protect only the shin and can be combined with a separate instep protector if needed. The advantage is greater freedom of movement for the foot, and if you use a separate instep guard, it actually offers more complete coverage in that area than classic or tubular Shin Guards. It's a less common choice, but it's used in some Kickboxing formats and in competitions that require separately certified protectors.

Feature Rigid with instep Sock-style Rigid without instep
Protection High (shin + instep) Medium (shin) High (shin) + separate instep
Mobility Good Excellent Good
Main use Muay Thai, Kickboxing MMA, grappling, technical Kickboxing (competition)
Fastening Velcro + elastic under foot Elastic (like a sock) Velcro
Ideal for Intense sparring Technical training / MMA Regulated competition

How to Choose the Right Size Shin Guards

Unlike boxing gloves (which are sized by weight), Shin Guards are chosen based on your height. As a general reference, sizes usually come in S, M, L, and XL, although some models use combined sizes like S/M and L/XL.

The Shin Guard should cover from just below the knee down to the instep. If it's too short at the top, you're leaving your knee exposed to hits. If it's too short at the bottom, any impact on the instep is going to hurt a lot. It's better to have a little extra length than not enough β€” just make sure it doesn't sit so high above the knee that it becomes uncomfortable when kicking.

Keep in mind that sizing varies between brands. A Fairtex M may not be the same as a Venum M. Always check the manufacturer's size guide before choosing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shin Guards

Can I use the same Shin Guards for Muay Thai and MMA?

It depends. Rigid Muay Thai Shin Guards are too bulky for MMA: they get in the way on the ground and interfere with grappling. If you train both disciplines, the ideal setup is to have one pair of each type. Rigid guards with instep for striking classes or sparring with kicks, and sock-style guards for MMA training involving clinch, takedowns, and ground work. If you can only buy one pair, rigid guards with instep are the most versatile option for sparring.

Why do my Shin Guards rotate when I kick?

It usually comes down to two things: a size that's too large, or a low-quality model with weak fastening. Look for Shin Guards with wide double velcro on the calf and elastic bands at the heel and ball of the foot. If they still rotate, try going down a size.

How do I clean my Shin Guards so they don't smell?

Built-up sweat is enemy number one. After every training session, let your Shin Guards dry open in the air β€” and never leave them stuffed in a closed gym bag. Wipe them down with a soft disinfectant or a mixture of water and baking soda. Sock-style Shin Guards can go in the washing machine on a gentle cycle β€” don't use the dryer. For rigid guards, stick to surface cleaning, though you can also use one of the disinfectant and odor-eliminating sprays we carry at RoninWear.

Which Shin Guard brands are the best?

The top brands β€” Fairtex, Venum, Leone, Twins, Hayabusa, Buddha, Okami β€” offer similar quality levels in their premium ranges. The real difference is in the fit: each brand has a different shape, just like shoes. Over time you'll figure out which one works best for your leg shape. As a starting point, Fairtex and Twins are a time-tested classic trusted by thousands of fighters, and the Venum Elite are a go-to option for their strong value for money.

Do I need certified Shin Guards to compete?

Yes, in official competitions you need Shin Guards certified by the relevant federation. Each federation (ISKA, WKF, IFMA...) has its own list of approved equipment. If you're just starting to train, don't worry about this β€” certification only matters when you're ready to compete.
